The Rise Of Ashtanga Yoga Centers On The Main Line

If you've ever seen the movie, "The Philadelphia Story", then you have a pretty good idea what the Main Line is all about. Traditionally, the Main Line is slang for the suburbs where the super rich live and yet work in bug, bustling cities like Wilmington, Delaware or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Known for sprawling mansions, horses and more money than sense, the Main Line is now growing ashtanga yoga centers like mushrooms.

More Compact Way To Be Seen

Usually, sporting events proved the highlights of the normal weekly social calendar for the super rich families who live along the Main Line. These sports included horseback riding, tennis, golf and boating. However, this is a big problem with all of those sports now – they all require a large chunk of land. The Main Line no longer has the large tracts of land and so as turned to ashtanga yoga centers as a way to be seen.

Ashtanga yoga centers have become a very hip place for the rich to hang out, compare fashionable leotards, talk business and at least make a token attempt at breaking into a sweat. All branches of yoga have become very fashionable for all walks of life since Oprah Winfrey and several major movie actresses revealed that they have their own ashtanga yoga centers.

It used to be a sign or status to have a horse, a boat, a golf club membership and a Beamer. Now, one of the signs of status is going to an ashtanga yoga center. Twenty years ago, you had to travel into Philadelphia in order to find an ashtanga yoga center to be seen doing your ashtanga yoga poses. Now, you can choose from one of the many sprung up in the Main Line.

"Yoga Living" Magazine

There are so many ashtanga yoga centers and instructors on the Main Line that they now have their own magazine, "Yoga Living". It's not entirely devoted to yoga, but also touches on buying local foods and holistic healing. There are several ads that purposefully spell out how to live the fashionable "yoga lifestyle".

The publication boasts of a circulation of 80,000 in the Philadelphia, Main Line and the South New Jersey region. South New Jersey has rapidly turned into the "new" Main Line, with a lot of ashtanga yoga centers sprouting up there, too. Many of these were health clubs that converted over and called themselves "yoga clubs".
